Sternberg's triangular theory of love

  • Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love proposes that love is made up of three components:

    1. Intimacy: Emotional closeness, bonding, and the sharing of personal feelings.

    2. Passion: Physical attraction, sexual desire, and intense feelings of arousal.

    3. Commitment: The decision to maintain and sustain the relationship long-term.

  • These three components combine to form different types of love:

    • Romantic Love: Intimacy + Passion

    • Companionate Love: Intimacy + Commitment

    • Fatuous Love: Passion + Commitment

    • Consummate Love: Intimacy + Passion + Commitment
